What I’ve learned mentoring the next generation of Engineers

For the last few years I’ve made myself a resource for those looking to make a way in the tech industry. As unpredictable, dynamic, hard & rewarding as it can be.

As I reflect on the many conversations I’ve had with the next generation of Engineers, here’s what has been reinforced in me:

💡 Presence over perfection: People connect more with honesty about mistakes, pivots, uncertainty, and growth than polished career highlights.

💡 Fundamentals still matter: The industry is changing fast, but strong fundamentals are still what help you separate trends from real leverage.

💡 Leading by example matters more than seniority: The next generation is paying less attention to titles and more attention to whether your actions match your advice.

The common thread across these conversations is that people are not struggling because they lack effort.

They’re struggling because the path into tech has become noisy, fragmented, and hard to evaluate.

That made me rethink how I spend my time mentoring and supporting people coming into the industry.

That’s why I’ve decided to open a limited number of strategic advisory sessions each month for those trying to navigate the industry with more clarity and direction.
